RIDE THE VINE
Studio 702, Spring 2014
Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA
Critics: Trevor Lee, Ari Miller and Judy Venonsky
Ride The Vine is a proposal to inspire Philadelphia to rethink the potential of this corridor through a one-day bike festival along the Vine Street Expressway. With the expressway closed to traffic for one day, cyclists will ride a loop through the city along on Vine Street, passing the iconic public spaces along Vine. The event will activate spaces along Vine, ending in a festival at the loop-de-loop expressway entrance at 16th Street.
To build anticipation for this event, mobile gardens built on flatbed trucks will transform under-utilized spaces along Vine into temporary community spaces. The gardens can be re-configured into different community spaces such as outdoor movie theaters, art galleries, and cafes, and will move and change over time leading up to Ride the Vine. During Ride the Vine, the gardens will be along the route and in the festival grounds for music performance, food vending, and seating areas.
This project is a short-term, first-phase project to build momentum for Vine Cycle.
